BREECH BABY
TURNS! I am thirty years old and have been a chiropractic patient from age 5 and will continue for the remainder of my life as well as having my children under chiropractic care for as long as I can influence their lives. I am currently pregnant with my second child and I am 4 days over the projected due date. This of course is not unusual with my family history. However, having breech babies is not in the history at all. Two weeks ago the baby turned breech on us, the nurse mid-wife talked to the OB/GYN on call and they said I had to have a “version” done the next day to turn the baby the right way. What that is entails a lot of manual pushing (externally) on the baby where I would have to be in the hospital for this procedure. The baby and I would have to be hooked up to monitors and an ultrasound unit as well. Again not exactly what I would like to happen. I spoke to a couple of chiropractors and they suggested to try this adjustment technique called “Webster’s Technique”, to see if it would work before having such a straining procedure done. You see, this “version” is only 50% successful, it can cause uterine bruising and possible rupture, there is a 50% chance of going into Labor Prematurely, and if that does happen I would more than likely have to have another c-section. Needless to say I thought that they were absolutely crazy. There is no way I could go through that unless there was absolutely nothing else I could do. Well, I went and told the OB/GYN that I would not do it and that I was going to try this chiropractic adjustment first. She told me that the exercises that are given to help turn the breech babies really are not that successful and that they essentially just pacify the mothers until it is time to do what they have to do. She also told me that the longer I wait to have this version done, the more difficult the procedure will be turning the baby, for the baby continues to grow, which makes less and less room for the baby to turn let alone turn easily. I stood my ground said I would only do an ultrasound after a week of this treatment to see where the baby had moved. So.. I began getting adjusted that Tuesday evening (3/13/2001) by Dr. Chris Coffman and Dr. Chad Harris in West Chester, OH about a 25 minute drive from my office (They are certified in the Webster Technique). I got adjusted every day through Friday, then again on Mon., Tues., and Thurs. before my scheduled ultrasound (US). I noticed a lot of movement over that week and weekend of the baby. And on Saturday and Sunday I could not feel the Baby’s Head anymore under my right rib. I knew that this was working. I went in then, had my US and the baby had turned back! Head down like it should be! Hooray! The girls doing the US didn’t know that this was to see that the baby had turned. So when I told them, they were very surprised that it had turned so late in the pregnancy w/out the “version”. So chalk another one up for chiropractic! Tell anyone that you know if they are pregnant and if their baby turns breech, to go to a chiropractor that knows the Webster Technique to help that baby turn. It does not happen over night, and may not happen for a week or even two. The success rate for Dr. Webster alone shows, out of 800 women with breech babies only 25 babies did not turn. I would venture to say those are much better statistics than what the “version” done by the OB/GYNs can show. I will keep you posted on my progress. Yours in good health… due to Chiropractic of course, Holly |
